The present study examines the fundamental formalities governing research article writing in Urdu, with particular reference to the standards prescribed by the Higher Education Commission (HEC) of Pakistan. The core argument is that the structural and methodological requirements for a scientific research article transcend linguistic boundaries; accordingly, Urdu academic writing must conform to the same rigorous norms applied in international scholarship. The article systematically addresses: (i) the selection and delimitation of a research topic, (ii) the collection and classification of primary and secondary source material, (iii) the standardized architecture of a research thesis from the title page through bibliography and (iv) the protocols for citing printed books, manuscripts, periodicals, newspapers, translated works, personal correspondence, online resources, and Quranic texts. Additionally, the study outlines HEC-mandated formatting requirements regarding font size, margins, line spacing, and binding specifications for BS, M.A., M.Phil., and Ph.D. level dissertations. Special attention is paid to the ethical dimensions of research writing, including declaration of originality, supervisor certification, and avoidance of plagiarism. The study concludes that disciplined adherence to these formalities is not a bureaucratic formality but an intellectual obligation that reinforces the academic credibility of Urdu scholarship.
